The Sue Pugmire Combo is a 5-piece jazz band consisting of some of Palmerston North’s leading Jazz musicians and itinerant music teachers with each member a superb musician in their own right.
The group has been playing jazz at festivals, concerts, community events and private functions both locally and nationally since 1999.
Some of the special things about this band are their wide range of musical interests and styles, their flexibility, superb musicianship, their energy and their diversity.
They play a mixture of songs and instrumentals. Styles include Jazz Standards, Ballads, Latin, Jazz / Blues, Bebop and even a little funk. Their music covers Jazz from the 1920’s to the present day. Artists as diverse as the “Greats” Sarah Vaughan, Billy Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Diana Washington, Julie London, Blossom Dearie, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto, Duke Ellington, Charlie “Yardbird” Parker, etc through to Norah Jones, Diana Krall, and NZ’s own Brooke Fraser. Sometimes the band also “improvises” a song or tune on the spot.
The band can break down to a smaller size if required and their music is enjoyed by a wide range of ages.
“The Sue Pugmire Combo have got it, -what-ever ‘it’ is.” (Fred Potter, jazz pianist)
