The Rodrigo Brothers began as a two piece band, coming from a background of singer songwriting and recording onto cassette tape. Since 1991 they have released 6 original albums and were working on the 7th in 2018. The style of covers and originals range from country to rock, rhythm and blues to pop and everywhere in between. They can play music spanning from the 50s to current music. Their large roster of covers gives them the freedom to perform tunes which suits almost any crowd. Rodrigo Brothers have a distinct kiwi sound, and some of their originals pay homage to landmarks around Wellington.
In the current roster of band members they have a diverse selection of musicians; Alan Gebbie plays the acoustic guitar, harmonica and leads the vocals, Silver provides percussion on the Congas and helps with lead vocals, Peter plays the rhythm guitar, Michael plays the bass, Izaac plays the drums, Michael plays the saxophone and Tania plays the flute.
With this range of talent they produce a sound that attracts a wide crowd of different supporters. The Rodrigo Brothers have played the gig circuit of Wellington venues for decades, performing their tunes to crowds in Meow, San Fran, Southern Cross bar and Moon amongst others. They have also played to the Newtown and Kilbirne Festivals. As well as public gigs they have experience playing private functions. Some highlights of their career have been performing for the Edgewater resort in Wanaka, a wedding in China and performing at Government House.
Through this experience they have developed the ability to play a large roster of music. They can play more than 200 different covers, and have 7 albums worth of original content as well. They are also used to changing the band for different occasions, playing a more ambient sound when necessary or amping up the band for a big dancing gig at a bar. Also this can involve rotating band members in and out of performances to fit the specifications of the venue.
